Charleston Plastic Surgeon Performs Complex Ear Surgery For Both Children and Adult Patients

Charleston, SC – “Even though ears are anatomically fairly simple and composed of only cartilage and skin,” says Charleston plastic surgeon Dr. Ram Kalus, “there is no external visible structure on the human body more complex than the ear.” Due to the complex anatomy of the ear, he believes prospective otoplasty (ear surgery) patients who desire to have their ears repositioned, repaired, or restored should seek out a surgeon who possesses an intimate knowledge of the procedure’s intricacies. In a recent blog post titled “Boosting Self-Esteem: Benefits Of Early Otoplasty,” Dr. Kalus explains why ear surgery can be particularly life-changing for children. As a society, many people desire their appearance to resemble their peers and strive to obtain a look that is considered “normal” – and Dr. Kalus believes this is particularly true during childhood. According to Dr. Kalus, excessively prominent ears can have negative consequences, especially for his younger patients. “Even mild excess projection can have a significant impact on a person’s self-image and self-esteem.” He goes on to note that, “Prominent ears are a very common reason for peer ridicule, and if this condition is a significant source of concern for the child, otoplasty can successfully ‘normalize’ a child’s appearance.”
Although otoplasty results are more predictable for children because of the nature of their ear cartilage, Dr. Kalus says adults stand to benefit just as much from the surgery. A follow-up blog post, titled “Approaches For Successful Otoplasty Explained,” comments on how the procedure is challenging regardless of the patient’s age. “Due to the ear’s unique curvatures and structure, there are many variants of what is considered a ‘normal’ looking ear,” says Dr. Kalus. Though there are a number of otoplasty techniques Dr. Kalus uses at his Charleston plastic surgery practice, he is careful to hide the scar either behind the ear or under the rim of the ear to achieve a natural-looking contour and curvature. He also highlights that although otoplasty is a complex procedure for the surgeon, the recovery is often relatively fast and simple for the patient. Regardless of the age of the patient, Dr. Kalus’ goal for any otoplasty procedure is to create “a more aesthetically pleasing self-image for the patient and [one that] can boost the patient’s confidence in both their personal and professional lives.”
