Inverted Nipple Correction

Many women are affected by inverted nipples that do not project outward from the breasts, which can be a source of embarrassment or distress about their appearance. Inverted nipples can be a condition you are born with, or it can reveal itself during puberty. It may occur in one or both nipples. Inverted nipple correction performed by Dr. Craig Rowin and Dr. Ram Kalus, our board-certified plastic surgeons, can be very effective at releasing the nipple(s) and restoring them to a forward projection. This procedure can often be performed under local anesthesia in the office setting and results are predictably successful, resulting in long-term correction and a satisfied patient.

The Inverted Nipple Correction Procedure

The procedure involves one or two tiny incisions to release the tethering milk ducts and bands causing the nipple inversion. Once this is accomplished, several fine absorbable stitches are used to close the tiny incisions, and a protective dressing will be applied.

Inverted Nipple Correction Recovery

You may experience some swelling and bruising after the procedure; however, any discomfort should be temporary and can be alleviated with medication. Our plastic surgeons advise patients to avoid anything that can compress the nipples for about two to four weeks after surgery. Dr. Rowin and Dr. Kalus will often leave a small traction suture on the nipple, taped to the dressing, to maintain it’s outward projection for a few days after surgery. Women must be aware that they may not be able to breast-feed after inverted nipple correction surgery since the cause is usually shortened milk ducts. Once divided, they may not re-connect.
