Dr. Kalus Interviewed by WLTX-TV for Breast Reconstruction Story
Dr. Ram Kalus, our plastic surgeon serving the Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina area, was recently interviewed by WLTX-TV for a story on breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Dr. Kalus offered his expertise on a variety of topics concerning breast reconstruction, including a new technique he is using that gives mastectomy patients the opportunity to have their breast restored immediately under the same anesthetic. In the news story, Dr. Kalus talks of Alloderm, cadaver skin that has all of its cells removed and is then used over an implant during breast reconstruction. Dr. Kalus says Alloderm is advantageous because it can’t be rejected by the body – in fact, he says that once it heals under the skin at the cellular level, the patient’s own blood vessels and cells grow into it.
Dr. Kalus also talks about the virtues of immediate breast reconstruction after mastectomy, restoring a patient’s breast before they have to suffer the full psychological toll of losing a breast. Dr. Kalus says there are a variety of treatment options, and just about every woman who has had a mastectomy is a candidate for breast reconstruction. Having performed nearly a thousand breast reconstruction surgeries, Dr. Kalus says recent advances in regenerative medicine and plastic surgery techniques – such as Alloderm – are making it possible for results to be safer and offer women many more choices.
