Charleston Plastic Surgeon Highlights Valuable Visual Tools For Breast Augmentation
Dr. Ram Kalus discusses the importance of visual aids when selecting the ideal implant size and shape for breast augmentation.
Charleston, SC – Recent technological advancements in breast implants have led to women having more choices for breast augmentation than ever before. While this increased number of options ultimately provides women with the ability to select implants that will most likely achieve the exact cosmetic outcome they are seeking, Dr. Ram Kalus understands his breast augmentation patients also need tools to help them select not only the ideal breast implant, but also the ideal implant size. In a recent pair of blog posts, Dr. Kalus breaks down why each of these resources is beneficial for his Charleston plastic surgery patients. “The one concern many of our breast augmentation patients share is ending up with breasts that are too large, most often because they have seen so many women who have been over-augmented,” says Dr. Kalus in a post titled, “How To Achieve Your Ideal Breast Size.” He goes on to explain that during the initial consultation, breast augmentation patients typically use bra cup sizes as their main means of communicating the results they expect. However, due to inconsistencies in cup size labeling as well as women wearing bra sizes that are either too small or too large, Dr. Kalus states that cup size alone should never be used to dictate implant selection. “Since breast augmentation is the most common aesthetic surgical procedure performed today, and also one of the most frequent sources for patient dissatisfaction or even litigation, it is critical to get it right for the patient,” says Dr. Kalus.
Instead, he believes “it is critical for patients to have a ‘visual’ conversation with their plastic surgeon, as well as a verbal one when deciding on an implant size.” To initiate this visual conversation, he encourages patients to use his website’s gallery (WhatSizeShouldiBe.com) that contains before-and-after photographs uniquely of his patients. The gallery is specifically designed for patients to enter their height, weight, and preoperative breast size in order to view all women in the gallery who fall into the same dimensions. Additionally, it enables patients to see women whose breasts may be similar, even though they may have a different height or weight.
A follow-up blog post, titled, “How Breast Sizers Can Increase Patient Satisfaction,” details the benefits of using implant sizers during the consultation process and the actual procedure. Before the surgery, sizers in a bra allow women to “try on” different sizes for a better visual reference point, while the sizers used in the operating room can provide Dr. Kalus one final safeguard against selecting an implant that is too large or too small. “No matter how much experience we have as surgeons,” says the Charleston plastic surgeon, “we can never precisely predict how a particular breast implant will look in a patient’s breast until it is inserted during the procedure itself.”
