Abdominoplasty/Lipoabdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck or Combituck)

Often referred to as a tummy tuck, abdominoplasty is available to South Carolina patients through Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas. Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that can significantly lessen the appearance of a protruding abdomen. The tummy tuck procedure is best suited for patients who have an abdominal fat deposit or excess skin that does not diminish with proper diet and exercise.

Abdominoplasty procedures offered at our South Carolina practice are designed to remove excess fat and skin, giving greater definition to a patient’s abs. Abdominoplasty is ideal for women who are experiencing abdominal laxity as a result of giving birth and patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and been left with excess skin. Those with excess fat who are not interested in also removing excess skin may benefit more from liposuction surgery.

The Tummy Tuck Procedure

Depending on the extent of work needed for the procedure, abdominoplasty surgery may last anywhere from two to five hours. The most common side effects of abdominoplasty include swelling, bruising, and some mild discomfort. These symptoms normally last no longer than 10 days.

Lipoabdominoplasty (Combituck)

Some patients may require both a tummy tuck and liposuction to improve the appearance of their tummy and trunk. This has also been referred to as a “Combituck.” In this procedure, a less extensive undermining of the loose tummy skin is performed, while much of the improved occurs through liposuction. This is a relatively new technique first developed in Brazil and in France, that safely combines both procedures, and one with which Dr. Kalus has extensive experience, and lots of very satisfied patients.

“Combituck” is a term that is beginning to appear as an alternative to standard tummy tucks. Body contouring surgery of any kind should always be considered in the setting of a healthy lifestyle with proper eating and exercise. That being said, if a patient has mostly just loose abdominal skin, stretch marks, and/or loose rectus muscles either from pregnancies or gaining and losing weight, a more traditional tummy tuck or abdominoplasty may be appropriate. For the patient who has some extra unwanted fat in the abdominal skin roll, a lipoabdominoplasty or “Combituck” might be the better operation. In this case, liposuction is performed over the whole area of the abdomen or torso (sometimes front and back), followed by the skin removal and tightening. The specifics of the surgery are somewhat different in order to ensure a proper and healthy blood supply. To determine which option is best it is necessary to be evaluated. But you can guess that if you can “pinch more than an inch” anywhere in your tummy area, a standard tummy tuck alone may not get you the results you are hoping for.Contact Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas to schedule a consultation today to see if you are a candidate for a lipoabdominoplasty.
