Why Breast Augmentation Revision?
Breast surgery never promises perfection. But when the results appear unnatural or require correction, patients often choose Dr. Rowin and Dr. Kalus for their breast augmentation revision.
You may consider breast augmentation revision if you have a problem with:
- One or both breast implants unnaturally positioned
- Implant size
- Implant placement impacted by breast tissue characteristics
- Implant visibility or palpability including ripping
- Deformity of the nipple-areolar area characterized by herniated breast tissue
- Tuberous breasts
- Thinning of the breast tissue resulting in the implants becoming more visible
- Pre-existing asymmetry not corrected during the initial procedure
- Deflation
- Capsular contracture causing hardening, shape change, or discomfort
About the Breast Augmentation Revision Procedure
Dr. Rowin or Dr. Kalus will perform your breast augmentation revisions in a hospital or an accredited surgery center where you will generally be asleep under anesthesia. The duration and type of technique used in your surgery is largely dependent on your individual needs and will be determined during a personal consultation with our plastic surgeons. After your breast augmentation revision, you will be dressed in a surgical type sports bra that will help to reduce swelling while supporting your breasts during the healing process. Normally, you will be ready to be discharged following your surgery after spending about an hour or so in recovery. During the next few months, your breasts will settle into a more natural position as the swelling subsides and the incision lines fade.
Breast Augmentation Revision FAQs
What can breast augmentation revision accomplish?
Depending on the specific concerns you have with your breasts, augmentation revision can be customized to:
- Exchange and/or upgrade breast implants
- Enlarge or reduce the size of the breasts
- Improve the contour of the breasts
- Revise the size, shape and/or position of the nipple areolar complexes
- Correct malpositioning of breast implants
- Enhance balance and symmetry between the breasts
- Correct issues such as capsular contracture, rippling, implant visibility, bottoming out, implant leakage/deflation, symmastia and more
Can I have my breast implants removed without replacing them?
While it is generally recommended that breast implants be replaced, there are some instances in which implants can be removed without replacement during augmentation revision. Particular examples of this are when a woman is experiencing continual—and often severe—implant-related pain in the breasts that may not be resolved by the placement of new implants, or when a patient desires to restore her natural breast volume. Depending on the size of the implants being removed, an adjunctive procedure such as breast lift surgery might be needed in these situations to correct a deflated and/or sagging appearance created by the lack of implant and stretched tissues.
What is recovery from breast augmentation revision like?
Following breast augmentation revision, patients will be dressed in a special sports bra designed to help facilitate healing throughout the recovery process. Some degree of bruising, swelling and/or soreness may be experienced initially, though these side effects should diminish over time. A significant amount of pain is quite rare, but any possible discomfort can often be easily managed with medicine. (Discomfort levels may be slightly higher if scar tissue is removed during surgery.)
Most women are comfortable enough to return to normal daily routines—including office-based jobs, school, errands, etc.—after approximately one week. To help avoid potential complications, however, our plastic surgeons caution that any heavy lifting, intense exercise, physical sports and various other strenuous activities be avoided for at least one month, at which point all restrictions are usually lifted.
Will I have additional scars after breast augmentation revision?
Fortunately, augmentation revision can typically be performed using the same incision lines that were employed for the original breast augmentation procedure. As a result, there is generally no additional scarring that results from revision augmentation. With proper care and close adherence to postoperative instructions throughout the healing process, scars tend to fade over time, becoming fully mature and losing their pink color after approximately one year (sometimes longer).
What type of results can I expect?
Our board-certified plastic surgeons are highly skilled in resolving each individual’s specific issues while achieving beautiful, natural-looking results. Whether a patient is not happy with the aesthetic outcome of a prior breast augmentation, her cosmetic goals have changed over time, or she is experiencing a complication related to her previous procedure, our doctors will custom-design an augmentation revision treatment plan that aligns with her current needs and goals for an ideal outcome. In the end, the satisfaction rate for this procedure among patients at our practice is extremely high.
