There are a multitude of reasons why women consider breast augmentation surgery. Most women are looking to restore breast volume from the effects of pregnancy, weight loss, aging or simply, genetics. Regardless of the reason, breast augmentation should be something you choose for yourself and not to fulfill someone else’s desires or ideal image.
Dr. Kalus will thoroughly review the benefits and possible complications of breast augmentation surgery with you before any treatment plan is developed. It is also at this point where combination procedures may be suggested to maximize your anticipated results. Dr. Kalus will address all of your questions and considerations to ensure that you make an informed decision that is right for you.
This question is often asked by women considering breast augmentation. Women considering breast augmentation have a couple of very important decisions to make. Since there is some variability in bra cup sizes women are often unsure about what size would look most attractive for them.
The most common transition for women seeking breast augmentation is from an A cup to a C cup. That being said, there are many ways to get there. To help eliminate some of the confusion there are a couple of things you can do to help narrow down the choices of implant size and shape and make things a bit less overwhelming. First, look at photos of women on the internet or magazines who are approximately the same size as you are (height, weight, bra size, etc.) View Our Breast Augmentation Gallery and see what kind of results were obtained after they were augmented. Notice what size implants were utilized.
Another helpful maneuver is to use a measuring cup of rice and select the precise quantity (in cc’s). Fill a woman’s stocking type sock to the desired amount. Rice is somewhat moldable and in a bra can give you some idea of volume and projection. (See Images Below.)
In summary, there is no substitute for a consultation wherein your plastic surgeon carefully evaluates your particular history and physical findings and reviews all of your options with you, but the more informed you become both before and after your consultation, the greater the likelihood you will end up totally satisfied with your decision and final result.
Following a thorough examination and discussion, Dr. Kalus will recommend the type of breast implant most appropriate for you. Silicone implants contain an elastic cohesive silicone gel that feels much like a natural soft breast. This gives patients both a more natural look and feel. The FDA has approved the use of silicone implants for augmentation in women 22 years and older; however, they may be used for younger women for reconstruction.
Saline implants hold varying amounts of sterile salt water. The incisions used for insertion of Saline implants are slightly shorter.
Gummy Bear implants (more officially called, cohesive gel, shaped, or anatomic breast implants have been in worldwide use for nearly 15 years and are considered the preferred breast implants by many European and South American cosmetic plastic surgeons. These implants are only available in the United States to doctors participating in the clinical trials of cohesive gel breast implants, but FDA approval of their use is expected very soon.
Breast augmentation is designed to restore and/or enhance volume and shape to a woman’s existing breasts. After breast implants are placed, a woman will have a more curvaceous, sexy bust line and hopefully a very natural look.
Breast augmentation is usually an hour-long outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. Breast implants are carefully inserted either under or over the pectoral muscle through about a one a one half to two inch incision. Dr. Kalus’s experience and skill set as a surgeon helps to minimize discomfort and healing time. However, following breast augmentation, as with any surgery, patients will need to follow post-operative instructions and return to our Columbia office for follow-up evaluations.
Patients who reside in South or North Carolina are welcome to contact our office to schedule a breast augmentation consultation. We serve residents of Charleston, Columbia, and patients traveling from North Carolina and nearby states.
