Can Blepharoplasty Get Rid of Tired-Looking Eyes?

Tired-looking eyes typically make people appear older, more stressed, or more fatigued than they actually are. The natural aging process, genetics, and other factors can cause eye bags and puffiness under the eyes or “hooding” above the eyes. For this reason, our Charleston-area practice offers blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery. This is a cosmetic procedure that can help reverse signs of aging around the eyes that contribute to a tired or stressed look. With blepharoplasty, individuals can achieve a younger, more vibrant appearance.

There are two different types of eyelid surgery. Upper blepharoplasty focuses on problem areas in the upper eyelids and lower blepharoplasty addresses concerns in the lower eyelids. Patients can elect to have both upper and lower eyelid surgery for more comprehensive rejuvenation. During the consultation, our plastic surgeons carefully evaluate each patient to determine which type of blepharoplasty can deliver optimal results.

Upper blepharoplasty involves removing unwanted, sagging skin and tissue in the upper eyelids. This procedure can reduce the appearance of droopy eyelids and eyelid “hooding.” Upper blepharoplasty can also improve vision for patients that have sagging eyelid skin impairing their sight. During the procedure, our surgeons excise drooping skin and tighten the remaining skin to help the eyes look more open and refreshed. If needed, underlying fat is removed as well.

Lower blepharoplasty can reduce excess fat under the eyes and eliminate unwanted puffiness and eye bags. Our surgeons may also remove excess skin and tighten the remaining skin for a more youthful and rested appearance. Whether you are undergoing upper or lower blepharoplasty or both, the entire outpatient procedure generally takes less than three hours to complete. Final blepharoplasty results are designed to be long-lasting, leaving patients looking more rejuvenated and alert for many years.
