Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ram Kalus, was recently featured in a Charleston Style & Design magazine article entitled “Sculpting the Soul.” Dedicated to enriching the lives of readers with the region’s latest lifestyle trends, Charleston Style & Design’s Robin Howard interviewed Dr. Kalus as an authority on the subject of plastic surgery and its relation to society’s perception of physical appearances.

In the article, Dr. Kauls is quoted in regard to his take on the perceived importance of physical appearances: “Beauty is not the answer to happiness. We know this because we know people who are successful and happy but not necessarily all that attractive, and we know people we consider beautiful or handsome who are miserable and self-destructive. Still, the reality is that appearance does matter. We are programmed for it to matter, and we are programmed to respond to it.”

Dr. Kalus later goes on to state that cosmetic plastic surgery is a personal response often based on the desire to “find our place on the appearance continuum.” Additionally, he also acknowledges reconstructive surgery as another type of personal response – only this time, to a much more serious issue than a desire to appear younger:

“Women facing breast cancer not only face a fear of dying prematurely, they face the fear of being disfigured. Today we are usually able to perform the mastectomy and reconstruction at the same time. It’s a tremendous advantage for women. There’s no reason they have to go through the turmoil of disfigurement and sense of loss after a mastectomy.”

An artist at heart, Dr. Kalus feels his job as a plastic surgeon is to “liberate natural beauty” for each patient while leaving no visible trace of his work. He has a deep love and respect for what he does, and he goes above and beyond to make himself available to each and every patient.
